Cancer Research UK turns 20, and we celebrate the progress we’ve made over the last two decades and beyond. New analysis reveals that overall, cancer death rates have decreased by 16% in the UK since we were founded. In the early 2000s, around 310 in every 100,000 people died from cancer each year in the UK. Today it’s around 260 in every 100,000.

This study confirms that using HPV testing as the first-line test on cervical samples is more accurate at predicting who is at risk of developing cervical cancer, compared with cytology – the previous method of testing. This means that the time interval between cervical screens can be safely extended for those who test negative for HPV.
